Which food will your birds choose? Kids set out three feeding dishes side by side, with mealworms, sunflower seeds and millet. Then they watch, count and discover what backyard birds or chickens like best.

What's in the box

  • 8 oz dried mealworms
  • 8 oz black-oil sunflower seeds
  • 8 oz white millet
  • 3 identical clear feeding dishes

What kids will learn

Grades K–5

  • Observe birds or chickens closely and describe how they look and act
  • Identify common backyard birds using a picture guide
  • Count visits with tally marks and turn them into a bar graph
  • Discover that different animals need and choose different foods

Grades 6–12

  • Design a fair test by controlling variables (dish, location, time of day)
  • Collect data over repeated trials and graph the results
  • Connect beak shape to diet: insect-eaters vs. seed-eaters
  • Draw evidence-based conclusions and explain sources of error

Curriculum & worksheets included

A printable curriculum is emailed after purchase. It includes a bird ID guide, observation logs, tally sheets and graphing pages for your grade band.

Feeding tip: mealworms are a treat, not a complete diet. Offer a small handful at a time.
