What kids will learn
Grades K–5
- Observe how dry sand flows, piles and holds lines drawn into it
- Make and compare patterns (straight lines, waves, circles) with the rake
- Build fine-motor control by placing small pieces with tweezers
- Describe where things are in a scene using position words (next to, behind, on top of)
Grades 6–12
- Investigate sand as a granular material: how steep a pile can get before it slides (angle of repose)
- Test how rake angle and speed change the patterns left in the sand
- Measure the tray and calculate its area and the volume of sand needed for a given depth
- Design a balanced scene layout and explain the choices using symmetry and proportion
