Maitake / Hen of the Woods (Dancing Hens - G. frondosa) Mushroom Grow Bag

DIFFICULTY: Advanced (Recommended for experienced and knowledgeable growers)

Fruiting Conditions:
  • Temperature: 60 - 74°F
  • Relative Humidity: 80 - 86%
  • CO2: less than 1,000 ppm
  • Requires a light source

Maitake is a slow-growing polypore mushroom that is challenging to fruit. It requires a longer incubation and pinning period than most other gourmet mushrooms. This commercially viable strain, "Dancing Hens," has known fruiting ability. Instructions will be provided, but we advise utilizing these alongside your own knowledge and research.

To enhance performance upon arrival, this species is shipped at an early stage. This approach minimizes damage to young primordia, which could hinder fruiting. Expect to receive a block that will require time to colonize after arrival.

Bag weight: approximately 5 lbs (2.2 kg) with substrate made from a blend of hardwood sawdust and soybean hulls.

Simple instructions for fruiting will be provided, but the grower is responsible for creating a suitable fruiting environment for the bag to thrive.

The bag will arrive inoculated, viable, and free of contamination.

Please note the following:
  • Due to numerous variables outside our control once the bag is in your hands (e.g., fruiting methods and environment), we cannot guarantee yield quantities.
  • The bag may arrive with in vitro fruits beginning to form; this is a normal sign of vigorous culture and will not significantly affect harvests.
  • Blocks may show signs of stress or cracking after shipping. They should be left to rest for a few days before attempting to fruit. Any cracks will heal as the mycelium regrows.
  • Bags contain live mycelium that may experience stress or die if subjected to prolonged periods of extreme heat. Consider ordering during cooler times of the year if you live in a warm climate.
  • "Ready to fruit" does not guarantee that the bag will arrive 100% colonized and able to fruit immediately. It means that the bag is inoculated and requires no further action other than waiting for optimum colonization.

If your bag arrives damaged or otherwise compromised, please let us know right away so we can address the issue.

We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.
