What kids will learn
Grades K–5
- Mix soil, sand and water and describe how the texture changes
- Test which mixtures make mud pies that hold their shape
- Watch mud pies dry and compare drying in sun and shade
- Collect and sort natural materials like leaves, sticks and stones
Grades 6–12
- Experiment with soil-to-water ratios and record which mixtures stay firm
- Compare soils from different spots in the yard by texture and drainage
- Build a simple filter and observe how sand and soil clean muddy water
- Measure drying time under different conditions and explain evaporation
