(Eutrochium maculatum) Native perennial. A perfect addition to the pollinator garden. Massive vanilla scented blooms attract swarms of various butterfly species. Plants grow 5-7’ tall with purple speckled stems covered in swirls of medium green lance shaped leaves. The 6-10” clusters of showy pink flowers make an excellent long lasting cut flower. Thrives in moist areas and enjoys regular deep watering.
To Grow:
Direct sow in early fall, press seed into soil of well-prepared seed bed but do not cover as it needs light to germinate. Keep moist until they germinate in early spring. Plant 7 seeds in groups of 2-3’ apart, as germination rate is naturally low. Thin to 1 plant once two sets of true leaves appear. Cold stratified seeds can also be started indoors under lights 8-10 weeks before last frost. To cold stratify, mix seeds with moistened seed starting mix or sand and place it in the refrigerator for at least 4 weeks, then press seeds into the soil but do not cover them with soil because they need light to germinate. Transplant seedlings outdoors after last frost. Water regularly.
